Who am I? Jeremy Deacon. I am married to a Bermudian and have two children who were born on the Island and who are both being educated here – so I have a vested interest in the future success of Bermuda.
I am currently applying for status as I now meet the requirements – having been married for 13 years and living on the Island for seven consecutive years.
As a very experienced media professional with 30 years in the newspaper and public relations business in Bermuda and the UK, at senior management levels, I have now set up my own PR and Media Relations company, Deep Blue Communications.

My work experience includes:
1. Deputy Editor at The Royal Gazette since 2008 – with six months as Acting Editor (from January 1, 2013.) Prior to being Deputy Editor I was the News Editor.
I was responsible for introducing to The Royal Gazette the concept of breaking news coverage, live text coverage of events and video reporting.
I also established and ran the very successful Facebook and Twitter sites for the paper. Between them they how have in the region of 15,000 followers.
I wrote numerous strategies for the Board or other senior staff, including a report to the Board on the way forward for the paper as well as a social media strategy which I was in the process of implementing before I left. I also completely rewrote the newspaper’s style book.
Whilst Acting Editor I was not afraid to introduce some changes to the paper’s design and I also rewrote contracts to include mandatory adherence to the Media Council Code of Conduct and the paper’s style book.
I was also responsible for bringing in Investors in People to conduct management training for senior staff.
As News Editor, I was responsible for the overall news gathering operation.
I was also very heavily involved in training and successfully established a journalism course at Bermuda College.
2. News Editor of the Hull Daily Mail, Hull, UK.
My position at the Hull Daily Mail meant I was in charge of a team of approximately 25 people, producing up to four or five editions of the paper a day, six days a week.
While I was there, the paper won numerous regional and national awards. Whilst there I also successfully completed industry recognised management training courses.
3. My PR experience - Director, Sturgess Van Damme
My public relations experience stems from my role as an equity-holding director of Sturgess Van Damme PR, based in Bristol, UK, where clients included a regional airline, a regional law firm, a nationwide chain of realtors and a regional firm of property consultants. I once even carried out public relations duties for the Prime Minister of Romania at a time when the country was trying to get entry into the European Union.
I was successful in getting these clients local, regional and national TV and print coverage in the UK, in both industry and mainstream media.
My experience means that I can carry out tasks ranging from news and feature writing, to press releases, to writing and implementing strategic media, social media and public relations plans that dovetail with the direction of the company’s vision.
On a personal level, I always strive to deliver messages that are clear, honest, unambiguous, easily understood and appropriate for the target audience and I will strive to become an integral part of the client’s team, learning the client’s operation and goals, helping to put together a strategy from where the client is now to where it wants to be.
